A Personal Message from Specialist PT Christine Astarita,
This guide is for the parent who is always looking for more for their child. Whether that be more recreational activities or even just resources that provide your child with a better quality of life. You know what is best for your child. Every single day you wake up, you are an advocate to help them grow and learn. You fight for them when things are unjustified and you search for ways to improve their lives and independence.
It becomes increasingly frustrating when you are looking for resources for your child and cannot find them. That is why I created this free guide. You already know that your child does not have a typically performing nervous system. Poor diet can actually inhibit your child’s nervous system function. Could you imagine if your child could perform their daily activities more efficiently? Wouldn’t it be easier to go about YOUR daily activities if your child felt better day to day?
Imagine they could learn more, be more attentive, or even just improve their response to their current treatment methods. What if you could avoid the doctor telling you that you need to give your child more or different types of medicines? Since I have began treating in the field, I have worked on a daily basis to help children and young adults to find their potential; To find something in themselves they were fearful of, or didn't know they could achieve. Whether that is sitting up by themselves to play with a sibling, or walking with an assistive device for the first time by themselves, I have learned it takes a variety of methods. Just one method will not be the solution for all.
I have made it my goal to show you and your loved one, that they are capable of more. Any of these tips in this guide could help your child feel better, be healthier, and be me adept for new learning experiences! Every single one of us is unique, so finding different approaches can work in your loved one’s benefit and help them gain value in their day to day activities.
I want you to imagine what the best quality of life is for your loved one. How are you going to get there?

More about the person you will be helped by…
Christine is a graduate of Richard Stockton University with an honors Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and her Doctorate of Physical Therapy. Originally when first getting into physical therapy, Christine was convinced she would pursue sports rehabilitation. Being a captain of her collegiate volleyball team as well as head coach for volleyball club teams, she thought she was destined to be an expert in helping injured athletes recover.
That took a dramatic turn when Christine performed her clinical affiliation at Cape May Special Services School District. Here, she worked with children 3-21 years old with neurological diagnoses and discovered her true passion for working with the special needs population. She realized that these children and young adults were capable of so much more than their school mandated programs. Here she learned and helped those achieve their optimal functional mobility in the school setting.
Christine has then since pursued her true passion of working with the special needs population. Since graduating in 2013, Christine has worked directly with children and adults from birth to 30 years old, whether they have suffered a brain injury from a traumatic incident or someone born with a neurological condition in nearly every type of setting including: outpatient, home care, and the school setting. She admires the fact that every individual is different, even if they are labeled with a general diagnosis. Christine prioritizes the individual’s presentation and areas of limitation versus treating based specifically on diagnosis.
In 2015, Christine received her certification for the TheraSuit Method in specialty treatment for those with neurological disorders. She believes that one method towards reaching your goals is not enough and that an approach targeting different aspects of achieving those goals (i.e. stretching, strengthening, functional repetitions) is the key to unlocking new potential! Every client is unique and she understands that what may work for one, may not work for the next. It is Christine’s true passion to help these children and young adults become more independent and confident while realizing their own potential. There are no limits!
While working closely with the families of her clients, Christine realized the difficulty of finding resources and support within the local community. After speaking with families on a daily basis of their major concerns and goals, Christine developed her own Support Group for Special Needs Parents on Long Island. She devotes her time to scheduling goes speakers and finding resources/topics of discussion that are prevalent issues for special needs parents in order to assist them in any way she can. She has been told too many times that being a parent of someone with special needs is isolating or draining, and it was time to create a safe, judgement free environment to discuss true concerns and issues.
Christine has also run in two marathons while fundraising for Kennedy’s Cause (Wineglass Marathon October 2016), and the Ariane Thomas-Lutchmedial Traumatic Brain Injury Foundation (Long Island Marathon 2015), raising over $3,000 combined. She devotes her free time to working with non-profit organizations to help raise awareness and funds needed to assist and is an active member of the APTA (American Physical Therapy Association).
Breakthrough Intensive PT was developed out of a vision to deliver specialized and individualized programs to your family, with your main concerns and goals at the forefront and main priority. While insurance companies attempt to dictate protocols and treatment plans, she knows what can really help your child achieve their goals to become more independent functionally and live a better quality of life. Her relationships with her families are rooted from trust and confidence that your most important concern will be met with full attention and care.

Kimberly 16 y.o diagnosed with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy“My name is Kimberly. I am 16 years old and have a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy. I have worked with Christine since August 2016. I have seen my own abilities improve with her method and style of therapy. My motivation to make progress and work harder has increased due to Christine’s positive energy and tough love approach. She pushes me to be the best that I can be. I know she has my best interest in mind and I know she’s willing to do anything possible to help me reach my full potential. Goal: Walk across the stage at graduation 2018
Parent of Patient Joseph 5 y.o with unknown diagnosis“Joey has never been able to do everything his older brother has. We still have no heard his first words or seen his first steps. It is an emotional roller-coaster not really knowing what the future holds for my son, but Christine has been relentless in her communication with me and my husband and education on what we can do to help improve his quality of life. It may seem like a simple task to have your 5 year old sit up by himself to play with his sibling, but for us is something we have not yet been able to experience. We want him to feel independent and have his happy and positive energy shine through. Since working with Christine, we have no only seen such an improvement with his strength and posture, but the joy on his face when he feels he is doing something all by himself for the first time makes every heartache and bump along the road worth it. I know that we are getting closer to seeing him achieve his goals everyday and experience his smile in the process.”
Goal: Sit up by himself to be able to play with his older brother
